Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia Church

Barcelona, Spain

On a spring morning, the air was crisp and the sun was bright. We walked from the Pension to the Sagrada Familia Church. In the park across the street from the church a group of men were playing bocce ball on a mamicured court. The players looked like old men to me from the distance. They were wearing baggy looking clothes and hats to block the sun. The bocce ball players looked like ants next to the 560 foot tall Sagrada Familia Church.

My travel companion was a student of archetecture, who pointed out all of the many marvels of the majestic building. One amazing thing I remember was that the church, a vision of archetect Antoni Gaudi, was designed upside down. It was never finished because Gaudi died before the project was completed. On the tour I remember seeing a bunch of strings hanging with weights. My travel companion explained to me that Gaudi had set them up during the design of the church building to visualize how the spires would be built.
